Weekend Review

The hightlights of a very lovely weekend:

- My friend Claudia just bought her first house (congratulations Claudia!!!), which called for some celebratory champagne sipping, toasting, and of course, the dreaded painting. Myself, Boyfriend, Rhyder and Claudia all spent the weekend putting things together, cleaning and getting paint all over ourselves.

- SIPPER-SAURUS! My bestie and I love dinosaurs (especially t-rex's and velociraptors), so when I saw this I immediately snapped a picture and sent it to her. She moved away back in the beginning of June and I've been missing her terribly. When I see little things like this that remind me of her my day gets brighter.

- I kill all things green and leafy, so imagine my surprise when I saw this beautiful lilly in one of my pots. I grew something beautiful! My nan would be so proud (until she took a peek at the rest of my house plants)!

How was your weekend?

Birthday Settlers

Yesterday was Claudia's birthday, so naturally it meant that we had to stuff our faces with pizza and play board games. I never win board games, especially games that involve being a little bit cut throat.

Settlers of Catan is about growing your settlement, gaining resources, and beating the pants off of your friends while doing so. It can get a little ruthless. I had to take a picture of the board when I won, because I'm pretty sure it will never happen again.

Happy Birthday Claudia! I love you lots!

Weekend Review

Well, hello and good day to everyone out there!

Here are the highlights from my weekend (also known as the moments I actually remember right now):

- I cleaned a garage. Yes, that's right, I actually helped make something more organized! My bestie and her fiance are moving away in a couple of weeks, so I helped them organize their garage. I basically just stood in one spot until someone told me to do something, and then they gave me ice cream.

- I made muffins for a friend at work. Her momma is fighting cancer right now, so I thought a yummy surprise would be a welcome thing on a Monday morning.

- I got my elliptical training machine! Putting it together was a workout in itself, but I'm actually looking forward to using this sweat machine (later on, someone will probably need to remind me that I felt this way).

It's Monday! Let's kick the crap out of this week and make it a good one!

Ahhhh, what a relaxing weekend!

On Saturday Boyfriend and I went on a bit of an adveture with Rhyder and Claudia. We all had some errands to run, so we did them together. We then had a huge BBQ feast and a little camp fire. Claudia had never had s'mores before, so of course I had to force feed her one (and I may have snuck a couple in too). Oz and Holly were lurking around the fire like hungry sharks, just waiting for us to drop marshmallows and graham crackers - sorry puppers, but no chocolate for you guys!

I've been trying to catch up on my Castle episodes over the past week, so I had a couch day on Sunday. Is there anything more perfect than a day spent with Nathan Fillion?

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Weekend Review - A Hairy Situation

Have I ever mentioned that Boyfriend is crazy?

You know when there's some kind of get together for the holidays or a special occasion, and everyone is hugging and kissing? Boyfriend is that person over in the corner trying to hide from all of the physical contact. He's my Linus (from Peanuts). Because he likes to avoid all unnecessary physical contact, he hates getting his hair cut at a salon, so I do it!

It turns out differently every single time I cut it, but I think I'm getting pretty good. It doesn't look like I hacked his hair off with safety scissors, so I consider that a win!

Harvey was very curious about the whole thing, and watched me the entire time. It turns out he was just waiting to play in all of the hair.

On top of being his hairdresser, I've also been his nurse this weekend since he hurt his shoulder. Of course I can't do anything besides massage in the Rub A535, but I like to pretent that I'm helping.

Besides the adventures in hairstyling this weekend was pretty relaxed; time with friends, time with the furballs and lots of down time.

How was your weekend?

Weekend Review

This weekend I figured out exactly how much I can eat without being able to move comfortably. What an amazing problem to have! This was actually a pretty jam packed weekend, here are the highlights:

- Friday was a holiday, so Boyfriend and I used our combined powers to clean up the house a little bit. There's no way I can describe to you how big of a job that was. I'm a PIG.

- After cleaning and not killing ourselves or eachother, we met up with Rhyder and Claudia for a day of video games, hot chocolate and turkey sandwiches. What is it about hanging out with friends that makes you eat like you're starving?

- I ran into two old friends who I was really excited to see, I love it when that happens! I also ran into my cousin and his girlfriend (who I'm basically in love with), wich was really nice.

- Saturday was scary because it was sandwiched between two holidays. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this before, but people seem to go insane when they can't shop for a day or two, and they feel the need to shop A LOT right before and after those days. The crowds were huge and I swear that people were buying things up like they were preparing for the appocalypse.

- March 31st is my best friend's birthday! Happy birthday Marissa, I love you long time! We went out for wings and had a great time. Our friend's girlfriend was really sweet about me awkwardly talking about how pretty she is and telling stories about me peeing my pants.

- I woke up to hidden chocolate all over the house this morning. Boyfriend is really sweet and indulges my favorite childhood traditions :)

I hope everyone else out there had a great weekend too!

Hugs and poops,

Nichole

Weekend Review

I've said this a million times before, but the best weekends are the ones where you end up doing random but simple things.

Highlights:

- Upon realizing that I've gained an inch around my waist, I naturally decided to go on a diet to become a famous model. That lasted about ten minutes before I slipped into a blissful few days of eating cheesecake and spending time with people who love me and make me feel beautiful no matter how many inches I gain on my waist.

- Finally felt well enough to take Oz and Holly out for a really nice walk. I now have some lovely calluses on my hands because they took me for a walk instead.

- Woke up this morning and got breakfast in bed delivered to me by Boyfriend.

- Tried to make some melted crayon art on canvas... I'm pretty I gave myself a crayon tattoo. Also, does anyone have any tips for getting crayon off a hardwood floor? I should have taken some pictures of the end result, because it was hilariously hideous.

- Frightened another pharmacist by trying to be friendly, but being creepy instead. Are there classes I can take to fix this?

- The car started leaking some kind of car juice, so we brought it to a garage. Oddly enough, the guy at the counter had no idea what car juice was.

I hope that everyone had a great weekend!

How To Be A Friend

Holly's method of helping with depression is to chew on the sad person's face. This method is not for everyone.
One of my most popular posts of all time is Bomb Drop. I'd like to say a big thank you for taking the time to read that giant post, and for giving me so much positive feedback. One person (who happens to be a very lovely friend of mine) mentioned that it's hard to know exactly what to do when you have a friend who is struggling with depression or anxiety, so I thought it would be nice to do a follow up post about just that!

Let me just say that every person is different. What works for some people may not work for others, but one thing's for sure, we all need help sometimes. The suggestions that I make here might not suit everyone's needs, but the imporant thing is to try. If these things don't work, talk to your friend about what might help them out. Communication is key.

Without further delay, here's a list of stuff you can try to make someone's day just a little big better:

Be observant.

When I'm not feeling the best, I tend to cut myself off from friends by declining hang out times and not responding to texts/calls. I also skip the little extras that normally make me feel good about myself (like showering, doing my makeup/hair, putting effort into my outfits, saying big hellos to people at the office, ect.). If you're close to me, you'll notice this stuff pretty quickly just be being observant.

Knowing when someone might need a friend is half the battle. I've lost a lot of friends because I'd cancel plans frequently, and because I found it hard to be in crowded places (like parties and bars). Sometimes, If you can, the best medicine is a night in. A bit of laughing, chatting and a movie can work wonders when you're feeling down in the dumps.

Be available.

When you know that someone's got a big ol' rain cloud over their head, get in there with a mop and some sunshine! I send mixed signals when I'm sad (I know, annoying, right!?). I'll tell people that I'm fine all by myself, but what I really need is a kick in the pants and someone to say "I'm here, I love you, get used to it".
I have no idea why I push people away when I really need them, but I do it all of the time and I can't be the only one!

Be yourself.

Sometimes everyone needs to be asked if they're okay and maybe have a bit of a cry, but a lot of the time your friends just want you to be good old you! When I'm not feeling my best, I love to see my best friends Marissa and Andy because when they show up they don't bring a pity party. Marissa is like a best friend out of a movie who knows everything I like and exactly when to say the right things. Andy talks about Batman with me and regales me with stories that usually crack me up.

Be patient.

Depression and anxiety can make people say and do all kinds of stuff. Try to be patient with your friend.
I get really frustrated with myself because I want to get up and take over the world, but my body won't let me get out of bed to even get a glass of water. This can make me a pretty cranky person. On more than one occassion I've snapped at Boyfriend for no reason at all, just out of pure frustration with myself. I'm not saying to be a doormat, but if your friend snaps at you and says something completely out of character, talk to them about it. More than likely they will follow it up with and apology and maybe an explaination of why exactly they're feeling so testy.

There is absolutely nothing you can do to cure depression or anxiety, but you sure can help to make dealing with them a lot easier.

I hope this was helpful! Please remember that this is all based on my own personal experiences, and that the opinions and ideas here are my own. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. If you don't want to ask them publically, just shoot me an email :)

Hugs and poops,

Nichole

Weekend Review

First of all, HAPPY BELATED ST. PADDY'S DAY!

This weekend was actually pretty jam packed! Friday night I had a nice little hermit evening for myself that included popcorn and Grimm. If you haven't seen this show before, and you are a fan of fairy tales and monster-esque stories, I recommend it! It's definitely my favorite show on TV right now.

On Saturday myself and Claudia adventured out into to world for some random shop hopping and female bonding. What ended up happening was me stuffing myself with food and spending money like I was playing Monopoly. Hooray! That night I went to a friend's party and somehow managed to put more food in my face. I'm noticing a trend here... Nichole + Food = No more food. Your tasty morsels aren't safe around me, friends!

I also did this:

Gorgeous, isn't it?

Bruises are like a fine wine; they get better with time. It took a day or so for this bad boy to get all of those fun rainbow colours, but I think it's going to rank pretty high on my 'best bruises' list.

Sunday was all about cheesy Paddy's Day movies (Leprechaun 3, I'm talkin' bout chu), great friends and, you guessed it, more food. I think I'll just roll myself to work on Tuesday. Hopefully I'll fit into my chair!

I hope you all had a great Paddy's Day weekend!

Thank You Mr. Oreo

Today I woke up with the means. I've mentioned this before, but just to recap, the means are when you feel really cranky and kind of angry. I had no reason to be this way, but there is no reasoning with the means... once they've got you in their grasp, you're sunk.

So I went to work, sat in my cube, and silently thought angry, punchy thoughts about everyone who fake laughed or said something irritating. Like a good little ogre in her cave, I miniacally planned ways to pee in their proverbial soup, all morning.

Yup, it was one of those days.

Then lunch time came, I hung out with some of the girls, laughed, and caught snippets of Days of Our Lives.

Sometimes to cure the means all you need are some laughs and an Oreo pudding.

Vaginas And Chocolate

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

While you're snuggling up with your lover bear or diving into some delicious chocolate, remember how lucky you are to have these little things!

On top of being a day for smooches and candies, today is also V-Day; a day to raise awareness about violence against women and girls, and what we can do to stop it. Every day women all over the world experience different types of mental and physical abuse, and many of them suffer in silence. V-Day is about women AND MEN showing their support for these people by speaking up and raising money for shelters and anti-violence groups across the world.

So here's your check list for today:

- Eat chocolate
- Snuggle someone (furry friends included!)
- Count your fortunes
- Donate to V-Day and be a friend to vaginas everywhere!

Yay for vaginas and chocolate!

Love In A Bottle

This week a got a little heartbroken over losing a friendship. It always sucks when you find out that you care more about someone than they care about you, but I'm trying to see the benefits of going through experiences like this. One thing I've decided is that it's good to know the truth about how someone feels about you, that way you can focus more on the positive people in your life, and stress less about anyone else.

I won't lie, I totally ate a hot fudge sundae for breakfast and cried for a bit, but I've learned a lot; I'm going to try to be less naive and more self sufficient from now on.

While I was curled up in a corner being a sooky baby, I got a fun idea for a necklace. Being crafty lifted my spirits a bit, and now I have a hilarious and cute piece of jewellery. I officially have a 'love potion' around my neck, so that nobody can ever break my heart again. Mwahaha

Here's to life lessons, being strong and ice cream breakfasts!

I hope that everyone is having a lovely day!

Why Pauline Will Never Be Saved

Some people are just not meant to build towers. I may be one of these people. This weekend we played Donkey Kong Jenga, which I've been dying to play for a long time, so I was in serious competition mode. Apparently I need to work on this mode, because I crashed the tower every time we played. *sigh*
We laughed a lot, watched Batman, and ate... a lot. I'm pretty sure that nights like this are the reason that the world still goes round. Great friend, great food, Donkey Kong and Batman. What more could anyone ask for?
Oh, and I've been practicing with the Jenga blocks. I'll be knocking down the tower with style next time!

A Visit From Lauren Michelle (Spree Studio)

Guys, it's official, I have an internet friend!
Last week I randomly met this lovely lady, and since then we've been blabbering on like we've known eachother for a million years (maybe even a million and one)!

Anyone with aspirations of a freelance career will definitely enjoy this post!

Hello internet people! I'm so happy that you're joining me today for a guest post on Blogging by the Moon! (Love the Shakespeare reference here). Before I begin my guest post, I would like to thank Nichole for inviting me to her stretch of real estate on the internet. I love it here—Nichole is a terrific lady. I’ve only just met her online last week by chance, and I’m so glad that I did! You can never surround yourself with enough positive people who are full of life!
Now, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Lauren Michelle and I’m a blogger/freelance writer. I love to write and I think I’ve pretty much always been a writer dabbling in random projects here and there.
I get a lot of questions from readers, clients, and friend that go something like this: “How did you do all of this? How did you get to where you are—you job seems so cool—how can I become a writer? Can anyone do it?” I also get some questions like this from my family, “When are you going to get a ‘real’ job.”
I’m not going to answer the second about getting a “real” job, because writing actually is a real job! Anyone who tells you otherwise wouldn’t know, I’ve met a lot of writers who make a terrific living doing so. But I am going to discuss the first question because looking back on it, I think I’ve taken an interesting path to get to where I am, and judging from Google Analytics—readers genuinely do want to know: “How DO YOU make a living writing and how can I do it too?” I’ll admit, it is a lucrative career—you get to choose your hours, do creative, enjoyable work (for the most part), and create your own income that fits your specific needs. But unfortunately like everything else in life, there is a flip side—you also have to be a business owner, salesperson, effective communicator, and (gasp!) a fairly descent and entertaining writer. LOL.
Quite honestly, writing is a job that almost anyone can do—if he or she enjoys writing! There are plenty of clients and readers out there to go around.

For me, it all started my freshman year of college. I was just like any other college student—living in a dorm, majoring in English, of course my parents tried to convince me that clown college would have been much a much more practical route to take, but they were supportive nevertheless! Being an English major, I’d always wanted to write a book—so I did! Well, sort-of. I thought college was the perfect time to experiment. Some girls kiss other girls to experiment—but not me, I wrote an erotic novella. Hey, I thought it was funny and I was bored. I self-published my work with Amazon Kindle and thought, cool—I’m a published author.

I really didn’t believe that anyone would buy my piece of garbage, so I just tried to forget about it. Well, that is until I got a check in the mail for over $1500! I was pretty excited. Soon after that, a small business contacted me online. They asked me if I would be their resident freelance writer. I thought, yeah sure, I could use some extra cash in exchange for writing some flyers. Then this person recommended me to others and I began to get more and more freelance clients.
Then something even more exciting happened, a freelance writing job opened up at a huge Pulitzer-prize winning newspaper—I applied and I got the job! A great-paying steady gig. Of course now, I was starting to make what I considered to be “real” money—and I was only working part time.
Book sales continued to increase as well and my client-base began to increase! I felt like I had a real career on my hands! It felt amazing. Now, four years since the publication of my my trashy little book’s release, a “real” publisher has picked it up—stay tuned for the re-release on my blog if you’re interested in learning more! There will be some major changes and since the publisher picked it up—so I had to take it off of the virtual shelves for formatting, editing, and a professional cover design.
Anywho—I just kept writing, querying clients, and moving forward in school and in my “side” business. Everything kept flowing smoothly and I’m still doing this today.

The thing is—anyone can do this job if you take it one day at a time. It’s been said a million times, but Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither is a freelance writing business. You just have to put your mind to it, grow a set, and work on your sales techniques so that you can get quality clients. Also, you have to shamelessly self-promote and be your own PR person (which is something that makes us introverted writer/blogger types squirm)—because nobody else will do it or care about your business and what you do unless you make them care! If you can do that, you’re pretty much set and you can expect freelance writing success.
Recently, I’ve launched a new blog, well, more of an eZine, which I call Spree Studio. Over at Spree, you can find information about me, my copywriting services, and articles about life in general. As I said above, I’m waiting for the re-release of my old book (there will be a launch party next summer with free stuff involved!), and I’m working on a self-help book to help other aspiring success-stories get there faster. That will be available Summer 2013 as well!

I love to chat with other writers and bloggers about furthering their careers, quitting their day-jobs, and dumping the 9-5 rat race (which I was once apart of). Email me! Lauren@spreestudio.com or go check Spree Studio for an otherwise good time!
Again, I want to thank Nichole for having me! I love this corner of the web and I visit often—you should too!!

A big thank you to Lauren for this post! Head on over to Spree Studio for more Lauren-y goodness!

Hugs and poops,

Nichole

The Test of the Gingerbread

Last night Claudia and I had our sanity and friendship tested by a gingerbread house. I'm happy to say that we passed with flying gumdrop colors (I knew we would!). Has anyone else put together a store bought gingerbread house lately? Holy turd sandwich, that thing did not want to stay together. There was a particulary tense moment (after the house had fallen apart for the THIRD time) when we seriously joked about breaking out the super glue. I think it turned out really well, but we are pretty certain that pictured house on the box is a lie.

Last night was an example of what I really feel this season is about. Dinner/time with friends, laughing, decorating, watching movies, and having the communal strength not to Hulk-out and squash a bunch of gingerbread into dust (I'm not crazy, it was frustrating!). I think I may have had one of those nights that you compare other nights to; it was that nice!

I hope that everyone has nights like these, and as often as possible!

Hugs and poops,

Nichole
